Because everything was awful for her. You were being selfish and thought that would help her.

How was everything awful for her? What happened?

[ before caroline can text back, damon runs through everything that's happened to elena as far as his timeline, trying to figure out what could happen in the future that he'd think shutting her humanity off would help her deal with it.

it hits him like he's been physically punched, and damon stares at his phone for a moment, fingers curling around the plastic so tight it starts to creak. as if she hasn't lost enough family members. ]

What happened to Jeremy?

[ oh great. so he doesn't remember. caroline feels a pang of guilt for dropping it on him like this then. because she's a good person. and even damon deserves better than that.

she turns it to audio because... easier and a little kinder.--]

He died. [ pause.] He didn't stay dead. But at the time, he was dead, actually no-Gilbert-ring-dead.

[ for a long moment, damon doesn't turn on his own audio. this is one of those moments where he wants to break something, or bite someone, or kill someone. jeremy died, and of course elena couldn't take it. of course he'd told her to shut her humanity off, because what else could she possibly have done? there would be no coming back from that, not for her. not for a lifetime. maybe with some distance, some time between her and his death... yes. turning off her humanity would have been the only way.

eventually, damon does turn on his audio, but it still takes him a few seconds to actually say anything. ]

You can't blame me for something I haven't done yet, barbie.

Except that it did happen. For me. I saw it. And I lived through the aftermath. [ caroline sounds, understandably bitter, considering elena ruined so many people's lives for a few months. her heart breaks thinking about those days. and still, because caroline is a good person, she seeks to ease his guilt a tiny bit.]

You and Stefan may have fixed it. [ it was really damon, he went too far and it worked. ] But that doesn't mean it didn't happen.

[blooded]

[ except he doesn't feel guilty. there's plenty in his life he regrets, and he's sure in whatever future caroline comes from there's even more, but that? at least with what he knows now, he doesn't feel guilty about that. it was the best choice he could have made for elena. ]

You lived it. Fine. Sorry some future me made the hard decision so no one else had to, again. But I didn't do it. Last thing I did was see Elena off to school the day after the Miss Mystic pageant. You can't put something I haven't even done yet on me.

[ and yet... despite the fact that he doesn't regret it, he is relieved that they fixed it. elena wouldn't be herself without her humanity. she wouldn't be the girl he loves.

damon falls silent for another long moment, thinking, then speaks up again. ]

Are we allowed to change the thing we asked for?

And I thought I had a denial problem. [ she can admit she has one when she's not in the middle of a denial spiral, which is something she just got done with. and she's going to always blame him for doing it, for making her turn it off when they could have helped her through it.

either way, she answers his question.]

Yes.

[blooded]

Good.

[ and that's all damon's going to say about that. next chance he gets, he's going to city hall to change his incentive to make sure jeremy never dies in the first place, but caroline doesn't need to know that. she'll just find some way to twist it, make it selfish rather than him trying to look out for elena.

with that line of conversation done, at least as far as damon's concerned, he switches back to elena. he's clearly not going to get any accurate answers about her wellbeing from her, martyr that she is, so his information will have to come from caroline. ]

Is she only feeding from the vein here too? Back home she couldn't do bunnies or juice boxes.
