[ elena didn't go to find caroline immediately after leaving her and damon's house. instead she walked around the settlement alone, just thinking, trying to work out exactly where their conversation had gone wrong. should she not have called him out on being condescending? should she have just let him take care of stiles? she didn't know what she was doing anymore, and she was so scared of losing both him and caroline. usually if she was having a fight with either of them she could go to someone else -- bonnie for caroline drama, matt for damon drama -- but they weren't here. caroline and damon were all she had, and she had already managed to screw both those relationships up. way to go, gilbert.

eventually she began to meander back in the direction of caroline's house, hands in her pockets and shoulders hunched against the cold. she wished the stupid sex planet had at least brought her from a time when she was wearing a jacket. ]

[ things weren't completely screwed up. caroline was scared, frankly. it was freaky being somewhere you don't know with the prospect of starving to death or going against your morals. and the lecture from her best friend didn't help things (hello caroline the hypocrite). but she'd fed and was less cranky and feeling a little better even if there was underlying guilt about it, although she didn't compel stiles.]

Elena? [ caroline was sitting outside of her hut, gently scrubbing her fingers with a washcloth she found. god, she'd kill for a shower.]

[ elena had been looking at her feet as she walked, but looked up at the sound of caroline's voice. her face made elena smile, but it was soft and a bit sad. she'd gotten piper to make some alcohol and take it over to her and damon's house, so at least there was that. she'd taken care of one part of her family, now she had to try to deal with the other. ]

Hey, Care. Glad you're awake, do you have time to talk?

[ she didn't know that damon had called ahead for her, simply thought that she was lucky that vampires didn't really need all that much sleep. ]
