[ it's been a couple days since elena and damon's trip back into the cave, and elena hasn't talked to caroline since the day before that, trying to give her the space she'd asked for. she'd seen her -- it would be hard not to, the settlement wasn't big enough for them to really avoid each other -- but she'd walked away every time she'd caught sight of her best friend. it was weird, but it was what caroline wanted.
