"You've reached Caroline Forbes. I'm not home right now. Please leave your name and number and a very detailed message and I'll get back to you as soon as possible."
[ At a certain point, probably when Katherine gets them drinks, Damon makes his way over to a pay phone. A freaking pay phone, because in edition to looking and walking like they're in the 90's, there are pay phones again. He misses cell phones. But, he promised to help her out, and he knows Elena would want him to check in. It's safe to say if Katherine's gotten it all back, Caroline has, too. Won't she be conflicted.
[ Caroline just happens to be home, lucky for him. So she answers. And if he thinks Caroline's gotten her memories back, all of them, he'd be wrong.] Hello?
Caroline, it's Damon. Don't you miss Caller ID? Do you happen to remember caller ID? [ He eyes Katherine from the back. Luckily for him, she's playing flirt with the local bartender. ]
Great. You sound caught up. I was going to do a whole, blanket apology for everything related to a certain someone and certain somethings, but more information has come to light. Specifically, Katherine's. You'll never guess when she's from. And yes, Caroline, I said when.
I'm Caroline Forbes. I'm from Mystic Falls. My mom is the sheriff there. [ Notice that present tense. And yes, she's listing this off mechanically.] My best friends are Elena and Bonnie. And I watched Stefan get his heart ripped out by Tyler, who I used to date.
That .. [ He brings the receiver to his forehead, tapping it, before bringing it back to his ear. ] complicates things. [ He lowers his voice ] Katherine got her memories back. It sounds like she's from before all of us. Like you, thought you beat her by about a year. I remember Stefan getting his heart ripped out, though, that was not Tyler, but someone possessing Tyler's body. Probably TMI at the moment. [ He pauses again. ] I think this call was a bit premature...
I remember other things, [ she says indignantly.] Those are just the big bullet points. [ The flash card sort.] I remember her killing me. [ The bitterness in her voice speaks to her honesty. ] I think this call was a bit premature [ she does her best Damon impression.] What's that supposed to mean?
Well, it would be an easier call if you remembered everything, don't you think? Cliff's notes version: Katherine and I have a truce, and pretty soon Stefan may reach the same truce. I thought I'd keep you in the know. Katherine's from about half a year after killing you. Give or take a month. The following school year, anyway. Your senior year.
[ Stefan hasn't remembered anything, or, nothing cleared up for him. It's the only way Damon can see it, that more memories have cleared up, memories he's not sure he needs. But, he promised to take Elena out today, and despite being dressed mostly for the weather, he intends to keep that promise. A part of him feels remembering her is new to him, which makes zero sense, and he doesn't like it. Damon can't be the only one living with these new dream memories.
He knocks, hoping Caroline answers the door and Elena's getting ready. Or, maybe that she's not ready, not to see what they are. Maybe she'd changed her mind. Maybe she's better off, with what he's done.
[ She answers the door, her eyebrows lifting high when she sees who is on the other side of the door. She doesn't know what he's been through or what's going on in his head, she simply looks at him and offers him an amused smile--]
[ Look, he promised he would. It's a weekend day. Damon never said he was unpredictable. ]
[ As he starts to speak, he gives one glance up to the camera, before bringing a hand to Caroline's lower back and guiding her down the steps away from the porch. ] You said, the last thing you remember, is that Traveler inside Tyler yanking my brother's heart out. Has that changed?
[ She lets him guide her down the steps, thinking it's weird that he's touching her so... well, just touching her at all. It wasn't really a thing they did unless he was being stern.] No, [ she looks at him, with an expression and tone that says where are you going with this? ] That's the last thing I remember.
Yes. [ She looks at him, confused.] Could you cut it out with the whole vague, pregnant pause thing that you're doing and just tell me what's happening?
[ He's sorry! He's not usually like this, but he doesn't know what to do or what this means. ]
I dreamt the next few years of my life last night. Stefan's life. Yours. And not like, in some vague, this could have happened way, but, a chronological, names, dates, deaths all of this feels like it happened way. Stefan didn't dream anything. And if Elena dreamed anything, it would involve lying in a pine box - [ he pauses ] still [ his eyes find Caroline again. ] but I thought if anyone might gain new information, it would be you. Obviously, I'm the lucky one of our twisted trifecta who gets to relive something I haven't lived yet.
[ a pine box runs a chill through her and she looks at him with wide eyes.] What are you talking about, Damon? You dreamed the future? [ She shakes her head.] Why do you think it wasn't just a dream? Because I'm already paranoid enough without you trying to go all fortune-teller, dream analysis.
[ Pine Box wasn't smart, he'd meant coffin and even then -- he momentarily forgot himself, and forget when Caroline is from. ] Because, events continued from where Stefan and I mutually remember we came from. And they didn't stop. Three years passed Caroline. Almost four.
So? That doesn't prove anything. [ She scoffs at him.] Calm down. This place puts fake stuff in our heads so if it wasn't a dream, for all we know it's not real.

Damon. Hey.

Hey. I'm here to pick up Elena. [ But, before she can go and get her, or respond. ] Can we talk out here for a minute?

His question throws her just a little, her brow furrows for a moment before she nods.]
Um, yeah, sure. [ She slips outside, giving him another expectant look as she closes the door behind her.]
What's going on?

And you know Stefan and I are from past that. [ She does. He knows she does. How does he even explain it. ]
